About Wichita EWGA
The Greater Wichita EWGA chapter is in its third year of existence. We are a young chapter with vision and
enthusiasm. We plan to bring the three strengths of EWGA: golfing, business networking, and social events,
to life in our chapter. By definition, EWGA attracts professional and management level women for whom the
business day/evening are demanding. Many of our members are women with children and the demands of
family. Through EWGA you can expand your abilities as a golfer, and a business person while enjoying the
camaraderie of everyday business women learning to play golf.

Member Spotlights:
Kathy Webb is currently serving as the Golf Events Chair for our chapter. Kathy has worked as an attorney in
Wichita for the past 25 years and is currently taking a ‘sabbatical’. Kathy’s best advice on the course, especially
for new golfers, is never, never, never give up – when you are 90, you will be glad! Kathy shares the following
with us:
"My parents introduced me to golf when I was 10 years old in Independence, Kansas. My mother was in charge
of “junior golf” at the local country club, and I played in the Southeast Kansas junior golf league for several
years. I was fortunate to be offered a scholarship to play golf at the University of Kansas and I joined the team
there in 1974. I played in tournaments with many famous (now senior) women golfers including Nancy Lopez,
Amy Alcott, Laura Baugh and Betsy King. I continued playing golf for the next 30-plus years. I believe it has
been the single most rewarding activity I have engaged in and it has provided many opportunities that I would
not otherwise have had. Anyone can learn to play golf at any age, and you can play this sport longer than any
other. This past weekend, I played in a tournament with a woman who is 90 years old – she plays any day that
the weather permits. I hope to be her someday. "
Trish Voth joined EWGA as the perfect multi-tasking effort - combining learning a sport that she saw others use regularly for business purposes, enjoying the outdoors, & making new friends & contacts around Wichita
who may have similar interests. The verdict (appropriate terminology since she’s a lawyer...except she
really doesn’t deal with verdicts as she is just a “desk lawyer” working on real estate transactions)? Mission
accomplished (well, mostly): having never held a golf club in her life until helping start up the Wichita EWGA
chapter a few years ago, she has a WAYS to go to play with any consistency or much confidence. Regardless,
she has made great friends and contacts through EWGA while getting to be outside.
She considers it an accomplishment to have at least played in a few business-related tournaments - her tips for
other novices like herself to venture into business golf settings? (1) play in a scramble tournament to avoid
any embarrassment playing your own ball, (2) try to get one or two solid players in the mix to carry the group,
(3) make sure the others players will not mind playing with a duffer, and (4) if you feel compelled at all - only
apologize ONCE at the beginning of the round for your skills - your teammates don’t want to feel like they need
to be your cheerleader or pychiatrist!
She considers establishing her handicap through the EWGA service free to members (it is SO easy to use via
www.ewga.com) an accomplishment - even if it is the maximum handicap score for female players (that’s
right – 40.4 to be exact). It feels nice to have it just so it is not a barrier to future play opportunities; probably
analogous to having your passport these days. While Trish has been very slow to work on her golf skills and
playing frequency goals the last few years, she is done having kids (Beau is almost 4; Reece just turned 2) so
out of excuses and looking forward to making some progress. She and her husband, Ryan Blankenship, just
joined Terradyne as part of their moving to and getting involved in Andover, and she has ambitions to finally
regularly get out to the driving range to practice. Trish admits at this stage in her feeble golf career, if not going
out with friends to golf, she prefers the practice areas over playing on the actual course (this probably says a lot
about her personality quirks, but we’ll save those issues for another day...).
